MUSIC is stress. Music is relaxation.
Music is fun. Music is difficult. Music is a hassle. Music is an escape. Music is what I want it to be for me.
Music is what you want it to be for you. I encounter music is two situations, as most people do: Making music and listening
to music. I play the French Horn and have been for five years. This experience has given me a perspective of the
hassles of learning, practicing, rehearsing, and performing music. I enjoy the final product but sometimes the process
that leads me there is taxing. I love listening to music. I have roughtly 70 CD's in my collection. Most of them are alternative rock, a few country,
a few soundtracks, a few classical. Music provides noise. It is not often that I have the time to sit and listen to music. I
usually have music playing in the background so my room is not silent, as I am doing now. I love having music in the background.
Sometimes I stop what I am doing and mouth the words to one of my favorite songs, but mainly I just let it play and I continue with my work.
I play music when I go to sleep because, once again, I like noise and I can't stand silence in my room. No, it is not because I'm afraid of
nightsounds. Sometimes when I'm tired I don't turn on the music and bask in the sounds from outside, but that doesn't happen often. Music is enjoyable
and energizing and I love to listen. I am open to different types of music as long as it isn't boring or two obnoxious. I plan to continue to play music
and I plan to listen to music for a long time. Music is everything it needs to be.
DMB, what can I say that will express the
greatness of this band. I guess the words that come to mind are "LISTEN" and "LISTEN CLOSELY". I say listen because the music
of DMB can not be described. The incredible orchestration, including woodwind instruments and a voilin, creates a new and unique
musical experience. Dave Matthews himself adds vocals that can be eeriely quite and calm at one point and frightening loud and boisterous
the next. To understand DMB you must listen. To appreciate DMB you must listen closely. Even I, a devout DMB fan, dislike their new release
"Don't Drink the Water" when I first heard it. It takes a few listenings to understand the musical intricacies that it takes to pull something off
like that song. Please listen to DMB and be sure to give them a chance.
R.E.M. is one of the great bands of yesterday. Although they are still performing and producing new
material I am not interested in much of their current stuff. But...their's latest CD, UP, just came out last
week and so far I'm really enjoying it. They seem to have gone back to their previous style of music (thank god).
I can't stop listening to the song "Walk Unafriad", it is so good. I somewhat enjoy their 3rd most recent album "Monster" but my interest lie with their old stuff such as "Out of Time" and "
Green". There you will find classics like "Losing my Religion" and "Stand". Don't judge R.E.M. by their current stuff, look back a littles and you
will enjoy. Aerosmith almost needs no explaining. They are one of America's classic bands. Unlike R.E.M., Aerosmith is
still producing good music. Their most recent album "Nine Lives" is the first Aerosmith album I owned and now I am in possession of 4 more. They
are supposedly come out with a new album in July 1998, we'll see. You can currently check out their newest song as the them for the movie "Armageddon"
which, coincidentally, co-stars his daughter Liv Tyler. Third Eye Blind is one of the best new bands on the alternative
rock charts. Their self-titled album is filled with tunes that each have catchy rhythms, beats, chord
progressions and lyrics. Some may be turned off by their all to popular and spunky "Semi-Charmed Life", the
album offers many, less spunky, songs. Including the solemn "Jumper" and the ranting and raving "London".
May favorite song off the ablum would have to be "How's It Going to Be" which, I don't know, the reasons I like
it are undescribable. Let's just say "It gets me." Garbage is my techno fix. I just purchased their sophomore album, Version 2.0 and I'm
really really liking it. It's so energizing to hear Shirley Manson's harsh and abrasive voice belt out lyrics full of
attitude. Including their three currently released singles (Push It, I Think I'm Paranoid, Special) the CD is full of many
others that are just as catchy. Also, be sure to catch their videos for Push It and Special...they are something, well, special. Collective Soul is a band that I'm seen in many differnt lights. My friend owned their first album
and I was really impressed at the time, and this was by only seeing the cover! So, I bought their next album (self-titled) and I liked it, but it was
kinda one-dimensional. They had a single on the Scream 2 soundtrack which I really liked ("She Said") and then I hear their newest single on the radio, "Heavy."
So, I bought "Dosage" and I'm really liking this one too. I now like the song "Run" which I had earlier passed off as crud. But, I guess if I can like
a song off of the Varsity Blues soundtrack I can like anything.
